Curriculum

Mauro Freccero, born on October 13, 1966, graduated in Chemistry (magna cum laude) at the University of Pavia in 1990. He received his Ph.D. from the same University in 1994, investigating organic reactions activated by photo-induced electron transfer. During his Ph.D. he spent a year as a visiting scientist at the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Maryland, (USA) with Prof. Patrick S. Mariano, detecting photogenerated radical ions by nanosecond laser flash photolysis (LFP). In 1994 he received a 18 months post-doctoral fellowship in the frame of an EC-Project at Dublin City University, studying detection and reactivity of radical cations. At the beginning of 1996 he returned to Pavia University, where he started a second post-doctoral project focused on photosynthesis of organic molecules through radical intermediates. In 1996 he joined the faculty as "Ricercatore" (Research Associate) and in 2002 he was appointed Associate Professor at the Department of Organic Chemistry, University Pavia (Italy). His current research interest is focused on (i) the reactivity of transient species such as quinone methides, carbenes and aryl cations in reactions with biological nucleophiles and on (ii) mild protocols for their activation, using both an experimental (organic synthesis, product distribution analysis, and LFP) and a computational approach (DFT methods, in solvent bulk). He has authored 70 publications in international journals and recently a chapter in Wiley Series on Reactive Intermediates in Chemistry and Biology 2009, 1 (Quinone Methides). He serves as an official reviewer for 6 international journals. He is currently collaborating with Prof. M. Palumbo, Dep. of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Padova, Prof. S. E. Rokita, Dep. of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Maryland, USA, Dr. M.-P. Teulade-Fichou, Institut Curie, Paris and Prof. S Balasubramanian, Dep. of Chemistry, University of Cambridge, UK.

Mauro Freccero è nato il 13-10-1966, laureandosi con lode all'Università di Pavia nel 1990. Ha ricevuto il titolo di "Dottore di Ricerca" nella stessa Università nel 1994, studiando reazioni di trasferimento elettronico foto-indotto con il Prof. A. Albini. Ha trascorso un anno presso il gruppo del Prof. P. S. Mariano al “Dep. of Chemistry & Biochemistry” dell'Università del Maryland (USA), investigando radical-ioni fotogenerati mediante laser flash fotolisi (LFP). Ha condotto attività post-dottorato per 18 mesi nell'ambito del progetto europeo "capitale umano e mobilità" alla Dublin City University, dove ha investigato la reattività di specie radical-cationiche mediante LFP. Nel 1996 è ritornato all'Università di Pavia con un secondo progetto di post-dottorato focalizzato sulla sintesi fotochimica di molecole organiche attraverso intermedi radicalici. Nel corso del 1996 è diventato ricercatore all'Università di Pavia. Nel 2002 è diventato professore associato presso il dipartimento di Chimica Organica della stessa Università. Il suo attuale interesse scientifico è focalizzato su: (i) reattività di specie transienti reattive come chinone metidi, carbeni ed aril cationi in reazioni con nucleofili biologici; (ii) protocolli di blanda attivazione per generarli, utilizzando sia un approccio sperimentale (sintesi organica, reattività mediante analisi dei prodotti e tecniche cinetiche veloci come la LFP) che computazionale (metodi DFT, in soluzione acquosa). E’ autore di 70 pubblicazioni su riviste internazionali e recentemente di un capitolo nel libro “Quinone Methides, Ed. Steven E. Rokita, 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.” E’ “reviewer” ufficiale di sei riviste internazionali. Collabora stabilmente con Prof. Palumbo, Dip. di Scienze Farmaceutiche, Università di Padova; Prof. Rokita, Dep. of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Maryland, USA, Dr. Teulade-Fichou, Institut Curie, Paris, France e Prof. Balasubramanian, Dep. of Chemistry, University of Cambridge, UK.
